TASK 8 - Thinking of a concept

https://youtu.be/BxVZUZpKqVI

From this mini, somewhat abstract documentary i'm getting inspiration of shot angles, camera angles, themes and how to use sound. I want the topic of my video to follow similar themes of inside the mind of an artist, or following the life of an everyday woman. It will show how a normal individual can be special and/or pay attention to the arts. This only focuses on one however I may include more than one individual or even have a couple. Whilst this style of documentary is unique, different and unconventional I will extend the length of mine to make it more conventional and add more interviews and one on one talks, although I will still attempt to follow the unique structure of this. My video may have different segments that could be separated maybe following different things or artists or even topics.
For example I could follow an artist and she talks about love then follow a relationship and interview them and get an insight on their love life, then follow an LGBT couple around in a similar manner as the I-documentary below, They may talk about difference then we follow someone from a different non european decent, they share their culture, speak in their mother tongue, briefly talk about the struggles they face in Britain etc. With the couples i may use a lot of rule of thirds, cutaways and non diegetic and fragmented sound. This may be very interesting and engaging to watch if done well.

A challenge I may face is getting it to match the professionalism of these videos, I want mine to match the style and somewhat the standard of these videos but realistically a challenge I may face is a lack of knowledge or equipment. The videography should be more artistic than the typical documentary so I will be using different camera angles such as tilts when needed and a lot of close ups to get a personal and deep atmosphere. At some points I want it intense and moonlit settings as seen in "summer of love" , then at other points I want it warm and relaxing with saturated lighting as seen with the Zariyah Allen the poet, mini documentary. Also elements of social realism may be shown as it my documentary may talk about health, racism and homophobia and also the apathetic rebellious teenager, in this case a lot of hand held shaky camera movements will be used, fast cuts and music. The age of people going to be used will be 16-21 to appeal to the 16-21 audience. Another challenge I may face with this may be the with the editing, I may struggle with changing the tone of the actual videos and making it look retro or film scratched when needed, or changing the saturation though I think editing the sound will be alright. Although there may be an issue with background noise and inconsistency with volume that I'll need to tackle.

Aspects of the "My Place" documentary can be incorporated to create a poetic realist effect. It is a minimalist approach in the sense that there isn't a lot of action however, it is very real and if this sort of style is incorporated with the types of artists I want to use then it could actually prove more interesting and artistic. I want my docudrama to document the beauty of real life, poetry, artists, lovers and deep thinkers so the welcome to my space type of style will be effective in moderation.

Exploring London's LGBT community as a topic

Task 8-thinking of a concept

The style of documentary I'm trying to achieve was first seen in the 1920s. They focus on experiences, images and showing the audience the world through a different set of eyes. It has abstract tones and is loose with narrative, the poetic sub-genre can be very unconventional and experimental in structure and content. This is the poetic realist genre and the ultimate goal is to create a feeling/ atmosphere rather than a direct truth, however it often uses real life people and experiences to do so. This style of documentary explores life as it is in the current time it is a documentation of experiences and society however the style exploits the poetry and art in reality.

Sexuality is a trending topic in contemporary society that, has evoked controversial conversation. Exploring these couples and the way they love can prove interesting therefore is a topic i'm considering for the poetic realist concept. This video is the inspiration for the basis of the documentary and has documentary conventions that will be included and enhanced in my own, however is still shot in a poetic way, making their reality portrayed as more beautiful and abstract.

In my task I will follow members of the LGBTq and expand on their experiences and the how they love.
This will normalise same sex couples and humanise them further. The people in my documentary will not be stereotypes but real people and will challenge opinions. The shots used will be more long shots and close ups. The message will be femininity, masculinity and gender is fluid, "forbidden love" and desire. I would like the result to look beautiful instead of rough however, in moments there will be the hand held camera movements that is typically seen in a conventional documentary. However i don't want the documentary to heavily educate or force views on people but to just show real life people and somewhat mould perceptions.

Task 5- Research Analysis

Poetic Documentaries

First seen in the 1920s, Poetic Documentaries are very much what they sound like. They focus on experiences, images and showing the audience the world through a different set of eyes. Abstract and loose with narrative, the poetic sub-genre can be very unconventional and experimental in form and content. The ultimate goal is to create a feeling rather than a truth.

Expository Documentaries

Expository Documentaries are probably closest to what most people consider “documentaries.” A sharp contrast to poetic, expository documentaries aim to inform and/or persuade — often through omnipresent “Voice of God” narration over footage devoid of ambiguous or poetic rhetoric. This mode includes the familiar Ken Burns and television (A&E, History Channel, etc…) styles.

Observational Documentaries

Observational Documentaries are exactly what they sound like — they aim to simply observe the world around them. Originating in the 1960s with the advances in portable film equipment, the cinéma vérité style is much less pointed than the Expository. The style attempts to give voice to all sides of an issue by giving audiences first hand access to some of the subject’s most important (and often private) moments.

Participatory Documentaries

Participatory Documentaries, while having elements of Observational and Expository, include the filmmaker within the narrative. This could be as minor as the filmmaker’s voice being heard behind the camera, prodding subjects with questions or cues — all the way to the filmmaker directly influencing the major actions of the narrative.

Reflexive Documentaries

Reflexive Documentaries are similar to Participatory in that they often include the filmmaker within the film — however, unlike Participatory, they make no attempts to explore an outside subject. Rather, they focus solely on themselves and the act of them making the film.

Performative Documentaries

Performative Documentaries are an experimental combination of styles used to stress subject experience and share an emotional response to the world. They often connect personal accounts or experience juxtaposed with larger political or historical issues. This has sometimes been called the “Michael Moore” style, as he often uses his own personal stories as a way to construct social truths (without having to argue the validity of their experiences).

Task 3 - Branding

Yoni Lappin

               Logos –

There is a lot of typography in this documentary separating the different sections of the film, The font remains the same throughout and has a rustic film feel to it which matches the rest of the film. The logos e see are at the beginning which is 'presented by nowness' letting them know the distributor and the type of film it is. Now ness are a notorious channel for experimental, interesting independent media products, so the fact its on the channel adds to the branding and makes sense to the genre of the documentary. This film type is observational and realist but quite dream like and artistic which is apart of the branding, portraying young people in a beautiful way.

·       Fashion/Look –
This documentary has an old fashioned, vintage feel to it. This is because it was shot on a film camera.
It was shot on film to give it a more homely feeling and show intimacy, this director does this a lot and likes showing relationships and allowing audiences to connect with the characters. The film scratches and hand held movement adds to this and shows an imperfectness to the way it was made, thus making it have more realist components and makes audiences almost immerse in this world and reality displayed. the clothes

·       Mode of address
The diagetic sound is of the surroundings, there isnt much edited and unnatural sound. In this documentary they have a lot of young people native to jeruselem speaking on their diverse experiences. They at times directly look into the camera and speak to audiences. Therre is no directors influence which therefpre makes it seem like the audience are just watching the world around them. We watch as the young adults mess around, walk around their neighbourhood and speak on cureent affairs. We see a girl skateboarding and a boy dancing, some people talking through their process of creating music all without influence of the director or a narrator leading the narritve making it seem like the people in the documentart are leading the story and creating their own representation. Also the audience accepts this representation as it seems realistic and doesnt seem made up or tampered with. This is unadulterly from the perspective of the youths of jeruselem.

·       Social networking –
I found out about this documentary through instagram as i follow both the director and the distributing account. This also came up on my suggestions on youtube. This was shared on an account made for independent films, the distribution is done on youtube so to gain views the filmmaker had to utilise social media. The advertising wasn't eccentric or elaborate but was simple like the film, clips of the film were shown to create mystery for the documentary. The documentary may have mostly been on social media as the target audience are young people and also youth culture is a key theme so this could possibly be apart of the branding not to mention it saves money.
